Is Silent Hill: Townfall Mainline? How It Fits the Series

Updated

Is Silent Hill: Townfall mainline? No — it's a standalone entry, not a numbered sequel. Konami describes it as a "full-length, self-contained psychological horror," and it's often described as a spin-off. You don't need to have played any other Silent Hill game.

How it fits in the series

  • New setting. Townfall takes place in St. Amelia, a fictional island town in Scotland, in 1996 — not in the town of Silent Hill itself.
  • New characters. You play as Simon Ordell, a new protagonist.
  • New studio. It is developed by Screen Burn Interactive (formerly No Code) in Glasgow, and co-published by Konami and Annapurna Interactive.
  • Familiar ideas. Fog, psychological horror and the series' radio — reimagined here as the CRTV pocket TV — all return.

It's also the first full-length Silent Hill played entirely in first person, and one of only a few entries set outside the United States.

Should you play it if you're new to Silent Hill?

Yes. Because the story is self-contained, Townfall works as a starting point. Start with our walkthrough or read how it plays.
